CUSTOMVUE

INDIVIDUALIZED LASER VISION CORRECTION

Chances are you know someone who has had laser vision correction. Since the Excimer laser’s approval by the FDA in 1995, millions of people have eliminated their nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and said good-bye to their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. But whatever the reason you haven’t had it yet, there are new advances that may have made your wait worthwhile. Now, there is VISX® CustomVue® Individualized Laser Vision Correction, and it is setting a new standard for laser vision correction.

Just like a fingerprint, each person’s vision is 100 percent unique to their eyes. Before the recent advancements in technology, doctors were only able to use standard measurements to correct vision, meaning that prescriptions could only provide a certain level of correction regardless of an individual’s needs.

VISX CustomVue can measure and correct the unique imperfections of each individual’s vision and provide them with the potential of experience better vision than is possible with glasses or contact lenses… their personal best vision.

HOW WAVESCAN TECHNOLOGY WORKS

Wavescan based digital technology was originally developed for use in high powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. Using this technology, your doctor can detect and measure the optical distortions unique to your entire optical system.

Light travels in a precession of flat sheets known as wavefronts. Gentle wavefront lights enter the eye, pass through the entire optical system (cornea, lens, and retina) and are then reflected back into the Wavescan sensors.

The Wavescan system compares the reflected wavefronts with the original unaltered wavefronts. This produces a fingerprint of you vision, WavePrint map. This information is then transferred to the VISX STAR S4 Excimer laser and is used as a guide to reshape the cornea during your laser vision treatment.

Ideal wavefront exits the eye as a regular flat plane wave.

Deformed wavefront exits the eye as an irregular curved wave.

WaveScan technology provides 25 times more precise measurements than standard methods used for glasses and contact lenses.

LASER VISION PROCEDURES

PRK

LASIK

Laser vision correction was first performed using a procedure called Photo-Refractive Keratectomy or PRK. PRK has undergone much advancement since 1995. Vision correction with PRK is accomplished by removing tissue from the surface of the cornea.

Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis or LASIK, is the most popular form of laser vision correction and corrects vision by removing tissue from the inner cornea. Making a corneal flap and then reshaping the inner tissue provides a more rapid return of functional vision and less post-operative discomfort.

On the day of the procedure, anesthetic drops are places into the eye. If the patient is a candidate for CustomVue, their unique correction information is transferred from the Wavescan to the VISX STAR S4 Excimer laser and guides the laser throughout the procedure.

Often, in less than a minute, the cool beam from the laser gently reshapes the cornea, removing microscopic amount soft tissue—less than the thickness of a human hair in most cases—to create a new curvature. During the procedure the 3D ACTIVETRAK eye tracker follows the eye’s tiniest moves. It automatically repositions the laser to keep the laser beam focused where the doctor want sit so one can completely relax during the procedure.

Many patients notice immediate result after CustomVue with their vision continuing to improve over several days. Routine follow-up visits complete the process. VISX lasers have been used to perform more than six million laser vision correction procedures in the US and around the world. Every year, more doctors use VISX lasers to perform laser vision correction than any other system.

GREAT RESULTS BY DAY AND NIGHT

Damage resulting from glaucoma is unfortunately permanent. Treatment frequently involves management of the pressure inside your eye. The most common place to start is with prescription eye drops that either drain fluid or decrease the amount of fluid made by your eye.

In the past, laser vision correction patients have occasionally complained about their night vision. Of course, these symptoms can even be present in people without LASIK whose vision is corrected with glasses or contact lenses. However, in the CustomVue FDA clinical study, most people were satisfied or very staisfied with their night vision after their CustomVue LASIK as compared to their prior level of satisfaction using glasses or contact lenses.

Although no individual surgical outcome can be guaranteed, these clinical studies, nevertheless, show the extraordinary effectiveness of this exciting technology.

Night driving without halos

One year after the CustomVue procedure, nearsighted patients in a clinical study reported these great restults without glasses or contact lenses:

100% could pass a driving test
98% could see 20/20 or better
70% could see better than 20/20

Recent advancements in treatment for people with mixed astigmatism are especially encouranging. Until recently, these people faced unique challenges because their vision is often difficult to correct with glasses and contact lenses. They now have the potential to achieve better vision than before with glasses and contact lenses.

Dr. Santamaria was very patient and comforting during the entire process. I was reassured multiple times that my eyes were healthy enough for LASIK. During the procedure, he and his assistant made sure I was comfortable and made the process painless. I have had no issues since the surgery and wouldn't think twice about recommending Dr. Santamaria!
